This sculptural chaise lounge, attributed to the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios, was produced in Brazil during the 1960s, a period when Brazilian modern furniture reached full maturity—balancing architectural rigor, artisanal knowledge, and sculptural comfort. Institutions such as the Liceu played a crucial role in this evolution, training generations of craftsmen who translated modernist principles into finely executed domestic furniture.
Constructed in Brazilian rosewood (jacarandá), the chaise features an elegantly articulated wooden structure with curved arms and four tapered legs, accented by brass sabots on the front legs. The organic silhouette reflects the era’s emphasis on ergonomic form and visual lightness, while the generous proportions speak to the Brazilian reinterpretation of modern comfort.
Upholstered in beige bouclé, the gently contoured seat and backrest are finished with three subtle, fabric-covered buttons, reinforcing the piece’s refined character. Discovered in Teresópolis, a mountain city closely associated with Brazil’s mid-century modern architectural culture, the chaise has been meticulously restored. The wood has been refinished to reveal its expressive grain, and the upholstery was expertly executed by our New York–based artisans.
An elegant and increasingly rare example of Brazilian modern seating, bridging institutional craftsmanship and sculptural design.
