HOT ! Thunderbird American Hook Rug - 3\' x 4’

This rug was hand-hooked in the Northern New Mexico during the second quarter of the 20th century and likely within a regional craft circle influenced by New Deal era (WPA/NYA) fiber-arts programs and the Taos–Santa Fe art-colony movement, both of which encouraged handmade works drawing on Indigenous and Hispano symbolism

It features a variety of Native American symbols against a cream ground and a framed border of interlocking red and blue triangles that have been perfectly reconciled around the corners. The most prominent motif is a thunderbird, a symbol of protection, power, and strength. To the left are what appear to be bear paw prints (protection, power, and strength), and to the right a Teepee (connection to nature and the ancestors) and a deer hoof (strength, agility, and grace). Below the thunderbird are two crossed arrows representing friendship or connection and the initials \"JCM\".

Rugs of this kind were often made in small New Mexican workshops or WPA-supported craft programs that trained local makers to adapt traditional Southwestern imagery into domestic textiles.

In very good condition for its age. The binding has been replaced and the rug has been backed for extra structure and to prolong its longevity for the next generation. Flat pile, with a soft handle.
